First ESP Commissioned at South Azadegan Oil Field by Petropars Group

  2026 February 02
The first Electrical Submersible Pump (ESP) at the South Azadegan Oil Field has been successfully commissioned by Petropars Group, marking the formal start of the well revival and production enhancement program in this strategic shared reservoir.

According to the Public Relations and International Affairs Department of Petropars Group, as one of the subsidiaries of the Ministry of Oil and the country’s largest Exploration and Production (E&P) company, Petropars has initiated a structured program to restore and boost output from declining wells in South Azadegan. The Group has maintained continuous operational presence in the field for more than seven years.

Dr. Hamidreza Saghafi, CEO of Petropars Group, emphasized the strategic importance of this milestone, stating that the achievement is the result of round-the-clock efforts by Petropars teams, Petropars Oil Services Company (POSCO), and Petroleum Engineering and Development Company (PEDEX). He noted that constructive coordination between Petropars and the project employer played a decisive role in accelerating implementation.

Shahab Bastami, CEO of Petropars Oil Services Company (POSCO), explained that reservoir pressure depletion in certain wells of South Azadegan had reduced natural flow potential. In response, the deployment of Artificial Lift systems has been prioritized as an operational solution to sustain and enhance production.

He added that with the mobilization of ESP systems and the deployment of a Truck Mounted Rig (TMR) in the field, pump installation operations have commenced. The process is being executed in phases to restore legacy wells, including Well No. 93. Initial performance data indicate a stabilized production rate of 1,100 barrels of oil per day (bopd) from this well.

In this context, Ebrahim Nari, Development Project Manager of South Azadegan (GC), stated that over recent years Petropars has played an active role not only in drilling, workover, and well reactivation, but also in the development of surface facilities, construction and commissioning of central processing facilities (CPF), and oil export pipelines. The current well revival initiative represents a continuation of the Group’s strategy aimed at sustainable production growth.

It is noteworthy that the Azadegan shared field is being developed on the Iraqi side with the participation of major international oil companies, while on the Iranian side development activities are being executed by domestic companies and local specialists. Despite operational constraints and sanctions, efforts remain focused on safeguarding national interests and maximizing recovery from this strategic reservoir.
