The first infill gas well on the SPD1 platform of South Pars Phase 1 has been successfully drilled and completed by Petropars Group, and after final testing, it has been connected to the country’s gas production network.
According to the Public Relations and International Affairs of Petropars Group, Dr. Hamidreza Saghafi, CEO of the group, highlighted the technical complexities of drilling this well:
“This well was executed successfully by POSCO a subsidiary of Petropars Group, with effective support from the Pars Oil and Gas Company as the employer, in one of the most challenging geological reservoir zones, at a depth of 4,640 meters with numerous faults and fractures, relying on the expertise of Iranian engineers.”
He expressed special appreciation for the technical and managerial teams of the Pars Oil and Gas Company and the hardworking colleagues at POSCO, emphasizing, “Without the sincere support, professional trust, and unwavering backing of the respected employer, overcoming the complex challenges of this well would not have been possible.”
The CEO of Petropars continued:
“The drilling issues encountered were carefully analyzed and documented as lessons learned to enable more effective control of drilling time in ongoing operations on this platform. We hope these experiences will improve the drilling time of the remaining two infill wells on SPD1 Phase 1; although the technical complexities and drilling challenges of these wells should not be underestimated.”
Referring to Petropars’s significant role in increasing the country’s gas production capacity, he added:
“In the past eight months, we have added over 243 million cubic feet per day to the country’s gas production capacity in South Pars.”
Dr. Saghafi further noted:
“Following final tests and acidizing operations to clean the productive layers, this well began production on May 24, 2024, and immediately underwent extensive acid treatment and connection to the production line. According to the plan, after completion of final tests, it entered production mode. This well adds approximately 80 million cubic feet (equivalent to 1.8 million cubic meters) of gas daily to the country’s production capacity, effectively reducing energy deficit and increasing the stability of the country’s gas supply.”
It is noteworthy that South Pars Phase 1, as the first Iranian phase of the development of this massive gas field, had previously been commissioned offshore and onshore by PetroPars Company in 2004.
