Phase 1 of South Pars Gas Field Development

Phase 1 of South Pars Gas Field Development

After exploration of the South Pars Gas Field as the largest gas reservoir ever known, the first Phase of the South Pars Gas Field development project was assigned to Petropars in 1998 leading to the establishment of Petropars Ltd. Therefore, immediately after its establishment, Petropars took responsibility for the development of Phase 1 in order to transfer knowledge of management and implementation of mega projects in the oil and gas industry to Iranian contractors through its cooperation with reputable international companies such as Kvaerner. It achieved its aim successfully.

In late 1998, Iran National Oil Company (NIOC) in a buyback contract scheme assigned Phase 1 of South Pars Gas Field Development project to Petropars. The Development of Phase 1 is the starting point of Petropars activities in which it has been following other goals in addition to the main goal of increasing the exploitation capacity of South Pars Gas Field. Some of the goals are as follows:

  • Acquisition and transferring of technology and management of khow-how engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of mega projects
  • Upgrading the knowledge and capabilities of Iranian contractors
  • Execution and management of mega projects based on international standards
  • Reducing the projects’ cost and reaching compatible conditions competition with international oil and gas companies

In order to achieve these goals, Petropars successfully finished the Phase 1 of South Pars Gas Field Development in 2004 by employing more than one hundred Iranian and foreign contractors. The share of Iranian contractors and suppliers was about 69% in this project, which is considered as new honor and record in the upstream oil and gas projects.

Phase1 project is the manifestation of our belief, “We Can Do It”, in the management of Iran’s oil and gas projects

After the complition of Phase1 development project, Pars Oil and Gas Company (POGC) devoted one of the offshore platforms to other phases of the South Pars Gas Field Development. It also assigned the increase of capacity and the supply of the required sour gas from only one available platform and the provision of maintenance services to Petropars Ltd. in the form of Technical Services Agreement.

Therefore, Petropars put on its agenda the activities related to modernize and change the platforms, connect new wells, and completely separate the transferred Phase1 platform. Thus, in order to enhance recovery from reservoirs with the present capacity and with minimum cost and time, Petropars took an important step towards achieving one billion cubic feet recovery from a single platform.

The Phase 1 revamping demonstrates Petropars’ commitment to satisfy its client.
